The Most Important Ingredient for a Growing Faith
Jul 26, 2025
If you’ve ever felt stuck in your spiritual life—like you’re doing all the right things but not experiencing much growth—you’re not alone. You might be attending church, serving, even reading your Bible, and still wondering: Why don’t I feel closer to God?
The answer may surprise you.
Scripture tells us that one of the most critical components of a vibrant, growing faith isn’t what we do—it’s how we think.
That’s right. Your mind plays a central role in your walk with God.
The Bible couldn’t be clearer on this:
-
“Take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.” —2 Corinthians 10:5
-
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” —Colossians 3:2
-
“Think about what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” —Philippians 4:8
-
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” —Romans 12:2
Let those words sink in.
Your thoughts—what you allow your mind to dwell on day in and day out—are shaping your relationship with God more than you probably realize. They influence how you respond to challenges, how you see yourself, how you view others, and how you relate to God.
Why the Mind Matters
Your mind is like the control center of your faith. If it’s filled with fear, negativity, comparison, or distraction, your spiritual growth will stall. But when your mind is focused on truth, fixed on Christ, and saturated with Scripture, transformation begins to take root.
That’s why Paul urges us to “renew” our minds. It’s not a one-time event—it’s a daily, intentional practice.
So How Do You Do That?
You start with the Word of God.
Don’t just read it like you’re checking a box. Slow down. Pick one verse and really think about it. Ask yourself:
-
What does this verse say about God?
-
What does it say about me?
-
How can I apply this to my thoughts today?
Better yet, memorize it. Let it roll around in your mind throughout the day. Repeat it during your commute, while you do chores, or as you fall asleep.
This morning, I was in Psalm 104:34, which says:
“May all my thoughts be pleasing to You, for I rejoice in You.”
That verse turned into a simple, heartfelt prayer:
“God, may my thoughts bring a smile to Your face today.”
Imagine if that was your mindset every morning.
The Result of Renewed Thinking
When your thoughts are aligned with God’s truth, something amazing happens—you start to change from the inside out. You begin to experience His presence more clearly. You become the person He created you to be.
So today, I want to challenge you:
Are you working on your mind?
Are you taking time to fill it with truth, to fight the lies, and to renew your thoughts in God’s Word?
Because the most important ingredient for a growing faith isn’t more knowledge or activity—it’s a mind surrendered and shaped by truth.
And that kind of faith? It bears fruit.
