Why You Shouldn't Skip the Old Testament

An open Bible resting on a wooden table against a dark background with the text ‘Why You Shouldn’t Skip the Old Testament.’

I love the Old Testament. I read it every single day—not out of obligation or duty, but because it builds my faith.

It honestly breaks my heart when I hear Christians say, “I really only read the New Testament. The Old Testament is too long, confusing, or violent.” I get it—some parts are hard to understand. But when we neglect the Old Testament, we miss out on one of God’s greatest tools for strengthening our faith.

Take Jeremiah 32:17 for example. The prophet prays, “O Sovereign Lord, You made the heavens and the earth by Your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for You.”

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve repeated that phrase to myself on difficult days: Nothing is too hard for You.

When the bills pile up, when there’s tension in a relationship, when leadership feels heavy—those words remind me of who God is. He’s the Creator of the heavens and the earth. He holds all power in His hands. There is nothing too hard for Him.

That’s the beauty of the Old Testament. It’s not just a collection of ancient stories—it’s a record of God’s power and faithfulness. It’s filled with moments when God came through for His people in impossible situations:

  • He split the sea for Moses.

  • He gave a teenage shepherd victory over a giant.

  • He shut the mouths of lions for Daniel.

  • He delivered His people from fire, famine, and fear.

When you read those stories, your faith grows. You start to believe that if God could do that for them, He can do this for me.

Romans 15:4 says, “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” That means every page of the Old Testament was written for your encouragement—to fill you with hope and strengthen your faith.

If you’re not sure where to start, try this:

  • Begin with Genesis to see how God’s story begins.

  • Read Proverbs for wisdom that applies to your everyday life.

  • Soak in the Psalms when you need comfort and courage.

Don’t rush through it. Let the stories speak to you. Let the promises remind you of who God is.

Maybe today, you’re facing something that feels impossible. A diagnosis. A broken relationship. A mountain of uncertainty. Whatever it is, remember Jeremiah’s words: Nothing is too hard for You.

The same God who created the heavens and the earth is the same God walking with you right now.

So pick up your Bible. Dust off the Old Testament. Let it speak life into your spirit. Because when you do, your faith will grow stronger, your courage will deepen, and you’ll discover that the God of the Old Testament is the same faithful God working in your life today.

Key takeaway: Don’t skip the Old Testament—it’s designed to build your faith for whatever you face today.
