Be the Example: When Your Life Becomes the Message
Mar 24, 2026
Let me ask you a question—one that’s both simple and uncomfortable.
If someone followed you around for a week and copied your daily habits, routines, and patterns of life… would they be better off or worse off?
I’m not talking about your Sunday morning church attendance. I’m talking about your Monday morning routine. What you put into your mind. The way you treat people when no one’s watching. How you care for your body. Your work ethic. The rest—or lack of rest—you give yourself. Your tone. Your attitude. Your integrity.
Because that’s where your real message is being preached.
In 1 Timothy 4:12, the Apostle Paul writes to his young protégé Timothy and says, “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young, but be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.”
That verse is loaded with wisdom.
Notice what Paul doesn’t say. He doesn’t say, “Timothy, make sure your sermons are polished.” He doesn’t say, “Win every argument.” He doesn’t say, “Convince people with your words.”
He says, be an example.
In other words, Timothy, your message is not primarily verbal. Yes, preaching and teaching matter—but your life is doing the real talking. People are watching how you live long before they listen to what you say.
And the same is true for us.
Whether you’re a pastor, a parent, a leader, or simply a Christ follower trying to live faithfully in a broken world, your life is constantly sending a message. The way you speak. The way you love. The way you handle pressure. The way you respond when things don’t go your way.
Your lifestyle either makes the gospel believable—or forgettable.
Here’s the challenge I try to live by: I want to live in such a way that if someone generally followed my example—not perfectly, not exactly—but directionally, they would be blessed, not burdened.
That doesn’t mean I get it right every day. It doesn’t mean perfection. It means intentionality. It means asking myself hard questions. Is this habit helping me grow? Is this pattern honoring God? Is the way I’m living pointing people toward Jesus—or away from Him?
Because the truth is, the way you live will always be a more credible message than anything you say.
So today, I want to encourage you: don’t just talk about faith—model it. Don’t just quote Scripture—live it. Don’t just tell people about Jesus—show them what following Him actually looks like.
Be the example.
And trust that God will use a faithful life to make an eternal impact.
