How to Know if it's God's Will

One of the most common questions Christians wrestle with is: How do I know if this is God’s will for my life? Whether it’s about a relationship, a career move, or a major life decision, the desire to follow God’s direction is a good one—but it can also feel confusing at times.

If you’re in that place of seeking clarity, here are four simple, biblical principles to help you discern God’s will.

1. Does it contradict God’s Word?

This is the first and most important filter. God will never lead you to do something that contradicts His Word. Scripture is the steady foundation we can always count on. If the path you’re considering involves dishonesty, compromise, or anything that goes against clear biblical teaching, then it’s not from God. He doesn’t change His mind or bend His truth to fit our preferences. His will is always aligned with His Word.

2. Seek wise, godly counsel.

You don’t have to figure it out alone. Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety."  Surround yourself with Christ-centered friends and mentors who walk closely with God. Sometimes they can see things more clearly than we can in the middle of our emotions or uncertainty. Don’t just look for people who will tell you what you want to hear—seek those who will point you back to God’s truth.

3. Pay attention to the Holy Spirit’s leading.

If you are a believer, you have the Holy Spirit living inside of you. Jesus said the Spirit would guide us into all truth in John 16:13. One of the ways He does that is through the peace (or lack of it) we experience when making decisions. Ask yourself: Do I sense peace about this? That deep, inner assurance often serves as a signal from God. If you’re feeling agitated, restless, or confused, it may be a sign to pause and pray before moving forward.

4. Does it serve others or just yourself?

God’s plans are rarely self-centered. He created us to love and serve others. When evaluating a possible direction, ask: Is this decision only about me, or will it bless others too? God often leads us into opportunities that allow us to encourage, help, and uplift those around us. If your decision is only about personal gain with no impact on others, it may be worth reconsidering.

Discerning God’s will isn’t always easy, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. God wants to guide you. He’s not trying to hide His plan—He’s inviting you to walk closely with Him, step by step.

By staying rooted in Scripture, seeking wise counsel, listening to the Spirit, and aiming to serve others, you’ll position yourself to hear His voice more clearly.

I hope these four simple principles help you as you move forward in faith!
