The God Who Calms the Storm

anxiety christian encouragement christian living difficulty encouragment Oct 05, 2025

There’s a story in Scripture that I come back to often because it reveals something powerful about who God is and what He’s like. You’ll find it recorded in Mark chapter four and Matthew chapter eight.

Jesus and His disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee. Now, this wasn’t unusual—they were fishermen, used to the water. But that night, something happened they weren’t prepared for. Out of nowhere, a furious storm swept across the sea. Waves crashed against the boat. Water began to fill it. These men, who knew boats and storms, were convinced this was the end.

And where was Jesus? Asleep.

In their panic, the disciples woke Him up shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” Can you imagine the fear in their voices?

But then Jesus does something remarkable. He stands, speaks a word, and the storm immediately dies down. The winds stop. The sea becomes calm.

And then comes His question to them: “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

The disciples were stunned. Scripture says they looked at each other and asked, “Who is this man? Even the wind and the waves obey Him!”

That question—“Who is this man?”—is not just about Jesus’s identity. It’s really a theological question: What is God like? That night, the disciples got their answer. They learned that God is omnipotent. He is all-powerful. He has authority over nature itself.

That truth is not just for them—it’s for you and me today.

Think about it: the same God who spoke the universe into existence, who set the stars in place and told the oceans how far to go, is the same God who calmed that storm. And He hasn’t changed. Hebrews 13:8 reminds us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

So what does this mean for our lives?

First, it means we can have peace. If God controls the storms of nature, He can certainly handle the storms of our lives—whether that storm is a health crisis, a financial struggle, or a broken relationship. We don’t have to live in constant fear when we know the One who rules over all things.

Second, it means we can let go of fear. Fear thrives when we think we’re on our own. But faith grows when we realize God is in control. He is powerful enough to calm the storm, and He is loving enough to care about what we’re going through.

Finally, it means we can live with hope. If God can calm the sea with just a word, imagine what He can do in your situation. His power is not limited. Nothing is too hard for Him.

My prayer is that as you consider this truth, you’ll discover a new level of peace, courage, and hope in your life.

Because the truth is—no matter how big the storm, your God is bigger. 🌊✝️
