What Captures Your Mind Captures Your Heart
Mar 22, 2025
In Matthew 22, an expert in religious law approached Jesus with a question meant to trap Him. “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” (Matthew 22:36).
Without hesitation, Jesus responded:
"You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind." (Matthew 22:37)
This wasn’t just a suggestion—it was a call to complete devotion. But what does it actually mean to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind? How do we live this out in our daily lives?
What We Love, We Think About
If we’re honest, the things we love the most are the things we think about the most. Our thoughts naturally gravitate toward whatever has captured our affections.
- If we love money, we dwell on finances—how to make more, save more, or spend more.
- If we love sports, our minds are filled with stats, schedules, and standings.
- If we love pleasure, we chase after the next experience.
- If we love recognition, we seek affirmation from others.
Jesus’ words challenge us to take an honest look at what occupies our thoughts. If God is truly the greatest love of our life, then He should be the One who fills our minds. But for many of us, distractions pull us in different directions, and before we realize it, God gets pushed to the background.
How to Let God Capture Your Thoughts
Loving God with all our heart, soul, and mind isn’t just about feelings—it’s about intentionality. It requires us to make choices that align our thoughts with His truth.
Paul echoes this idea in Colossians 3:2:
"Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth."
This doesn’t mean ignoring our responsibilities or shutting out the world. Instead, it means filtering everything—our work, relationships, and daily decisions—through a heart and mind surrendered to God.
Practical Ways to Focus on God Daily
-
Start Your Day with Him – Instead of reaching for your phone first thing in the morning, start with prayer or a few verses of Scripture. When we give God our first thoughts, it sets the tone for the rest of the day.
-
Meditate on Scripture – Memorizing and reflecting on Bible verses helps keep our minds centered on Him. Even in the middle of a busy day, we can recall His Word to guide our actions and decisions.
-
Pray Continually – Prayer isn’t just for mealtimes or church services. It’s a constant conversation with God throughout the day. When we keep that connection open, our thoughts naturally turn toward Him.
-
Limit Distractions – Social media, news, and entertainment can easily fill our minds with things that pull us away from God. Setting healthy boundaries with technology can help keep our focus where it belongs.
-
Surround Yourself with Faithful Encouragement – Being around other believers, listening to worship music, or reading Christian books can help reinforce a God-centered mindset.
The Challenge: What’s on Your Mind?
So here’s the question: What occupies your mind the most? Is it God? Or is it something else?
If we truly want to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, we must be intentional about giving Him first place in our thoughts. The more we fix our minds on Him, the deeper our love for Him grows.
Think about Him today. Talk to Him. Meditate on His Word. And in doing so, you’ll find yourself living out the greatest commandment.
Hope this encourages you. God bless!
