Why Pray if God Already Knows the Future? Two Thoughts That Silence our Prayers - and the Truth That Will Set Them Free
May 24, 2025
Have you ever wondered, “If God already knows what’s going to happen, why should I pray?” Or maybe you’ve thought, “God never changes His mind—so does prayer even matter?”
You're not alone. These two ideas have held many Christians back from praying with confidence. But let’s take a closer look—and discover why these thoughts, rather than discouraging prayer, should fuel it.
1. God’s Knowledge Doesn’t Eliminate Your Influence
It’s true—God is all-knowing. He sees the past, present, and future simultaneously. He’s not bound by time like we are.
But don’t confuse foreknowledge with predetermination.
Just because God sees the future doesn’t mean you can’t shape it. Think of it like asking a friend for directions who’s already been where you’re going. You’d lean into that friend’s wisdom—not avoid them. In the same way, prayer is about leaning into the One who already knows and partnering with Him to navigate life.
God’s knowledge should encourage us to pray more, not less.
2. God Doesn't Change, But He Does Respond
Malachi 3:6 tells us God does not change. That’s about His character—His love, mercy, justice, and truth are consistent and unshakable.
But the Bible also tells us that God does respond to our prayers.
One of the clearest examples is in Exodus 32. God is ready to judge the Israelites for worshiping a golden calf. But Moses steps in and intercedes on their behalf. He reminds God of His covenant. He pleads for mercy.
And what happens?
“So the Lord changed His mind about the terrible disaster He had threatened…” – Exodus 32:14 (NLT)
God listens. He relents. He responds.
What Does This Mean for You?
It means your prayers matter. They can influence outcomes. They are part of how God chooses to work in the world.
God invites us into the mystery and beauty of partnering with Him through prayer—not because He needs us, but because He wants us involved.
So next time those thoughts creep in—"Why pray?"—remember:
God sees the future, but invites you to help shape it.
He is unchanging, but still responsive.
Your prayers are powerful. Don’t stop. Keep praying.
